Adrenal Disease Q&A

What is the adrenal gland?

Your adrenal glands are triangular-shaped glands located on top of your kidneys. These glands are part of your endocrine system and are responsible for producing and secreting hormones that regulate your metabolism, immune system, and blood pressure. Your adrenal glands also produce and secrete your stress hormones.

What is adrenal disease?

Adrenal disease refers to a number of conditions that affect the health and function of your adrenal glands, which may alter production and secretion of hormones.

Common types of adrenal disease include

Cushing’s syndrome

Cushing’s syndrome causes an overproduction of cortisol, which is a stress hormone. Excess cortisol in your body may lead to a range of symptoms, such as weight gain, fatigue, and muscle weakness.

Addison’s disease

Addison’s disease, also called primary adrenal insufficiency, occurs when your adrenal glands are unable to produce enough adrenal hormones, including cortisol and aldosterone.

What can I expect during an adrenal disease consultation?

Dr. Thangudu takes a patient-centered approach to care at her membership-based practice, and you can expect a comprehensive evaluation during your adrenal disease consultation. At your initial visit, she schedules a 60-minute evaluation so she has the time to review your symptoms, medical history, family history, and personal health goals.

To assess adrenal health and hormone levels, she may conduct evidence-based testing.

How is adrenal disease treated?

Dr. Thangudu values patient education, and before she makes specific treatment recommendations, she spends time talking to you about your disease and how it affects your health. Increasing your knowledge about your illness helps you understand the importance of your treatment plan and empowers you to make the changes needed to manage your adrenal disease and your overall health and wellness.

Dr. Thangudu develops an individualized treatment plan specific to your adrenal disease, symptoms, and health goals. Your treatment plan may include a combination of prescription medications and lifestyle changes. Dr. Thangudu is certified in plant-based nutrition, and your plan may include specific diet recommendations based on your nutritional needs.

Once your plan is implemented, she remains in contact with you by phone, email, video chat, or text to help you stay on track.
